Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has alleged that former governor Gboyega Oyetola, a cousin of President Bola Tinubu, was behind the freezing of the state government’s bank account and other pre-election issues.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Adeleke insisted that President Tinubu was unaware of the actions taken by federal agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which froze an Osun government account earlier in August over alleged mismanagement of ₦11 billion.
The EFCC said it restricted the account after detecting suspicious transactions. However, Tinubu later directed the commission to return to court and lift the order, warning that the timing could be misinterpreted as interference in the Osun governorship election.
“The President is not aware of most of these matters. He has numerous foreign responsibilities,” Adeleke said.
He added that some of his aides were invited by the EFCC but released after no wrongdoing was established.Adeleke claimed Oyetola was responsible for instigating the actions, saying:
“All these things is Oyetola because he is the cousin to the President. He is dropping the President’s name. I know that the President didn’t know about the EFCC one. That is why he had to call me and stop it.”
Despite the controversy, Adeleke secured re-election with 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815. ADC’s Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won in 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji prevailed in 11.
