CCRP Seeks Fresh Police Review of Ajiran Deaths Case, Urges Evidence-Based Investigation

The Centre for Citizens Right Protection (CCRP) has called on the Inspector-General of Police to order a fresh, independent and comprehensive review of the investigation into the deaths of two persons in Ajiran Community, Lagos State, which led to the ongoing trial of Alhaji Tajudeen Akanbi.

Addressing journalists at a press conference, Abe Emmanuel Kolawole and Isijola Samuel, who spoke on behalf of the group said its call was aimed at ensuring that justice is served through a thorough, impartial and evidence-driven investigation, rather than being influenced by speculation or public sentiment.

The organisation stressed that it was neither seeking to shield anyone from criminal responsibility nor advocating the prosecution of any individual without credible evidence.

According to the CCRP, while the deaths remain a tragic incident and the families of the deceased deserve justice, the accused is equally entitled to a fair trial and the constitutional presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court.

The group noted that recent public commentary by social media activist Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VDM, had generated national attention and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the deaths, the handling of evidence and whether all relevant investigative leads were adequately explored.

It clarified that it was not in a position to verify the allegations made by the activist or present them as established facts. However, it argued that where serious and specific claims emerge in relation to a pending criminal matter, they should be objectively examined in the interest of justice.

According to the CCRP, VDM alleged that certain relatives of one of the deceased, including Babajide Akinloye and Haroon Akinloye, should be investigated over issues relating to events preceding the deaths and the handling of the deceased's phone and body. The group said these allegations should be subjected to professional investigation where there are credible grounds for further inquiry.

The organisation maintained that the integrity of Nigeria's criminal justice system depends on thorough, impartial and professional investigations capable of inspiring public confidence.

It therefore urged the Inspector-General of Police to constitute an independent investigative team comprising experienced homicide investigators and forensic experts to review the case file and examine any credible new information.

According to the group, the proposed review should include a forensic re-evaluation of all physical, documentary and digital evidence connected to the case; a review of the original investigative procedures to determine whether every relevant line of inquiry was pursued; interviews or re-interviews of persons with material information; examination of allegations relating to the handling and preservation of evidence; assessment of whether any evidence was overlooked or compromised; and determination of whether further forensic examinations are necessary.

The CCRP emphasised that its request should not be interpreted as an indictment of any individual but as a call for due diligence in the pursuit of justice.

It also urged the Nigeria Police Force to objectively examine any credible allegations involving persons connected to the matter, including relatives of the deceased, while ensuring that no individual is investigated solely on the basis of social media commentary or public speculation.

The group further called on prosecuting authorities to remain guided strictly by admissible evidence and not public pressure, while encouraging the defence team to continue presenting all relevant facts through lawful judicial processes.

Expressing confidence in the judiciary, the CCRP said the court should continue to determine the case independently and fairly based on the evidence before it.

It also appealed to the public, civil society organisations, the media and social commentators to exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of prejudicing the ongoing judicial proceedings.

The organisation maintained that comprehensive, transparent and evidence-based investigations are essential to strengthening public confidence in the justice system.
