Why Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin Stands Out as the Most Prepared Choice for Oyo State’s Next Governor

As conversations around the future leadership of Oyo State continue to gather momentum, one fundamental question remains central: who among the emerging names possesses the competence, administrative depth, political understanding, and development vision required to move the state decisively forward? In that growing debate, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin has increasingly emerged as a figure whose profile speaks directly to the demands of modern governance. At a time when voters are looking beyond slogans and seeking measurable capacity, his record offers unusual substance.

Dr. Gbadegesin’s public service journey reflects a rare blend of intellectual accomplishment and practical governance. With a Bachelor of Science degree with distinction from Howard University and a doctorate in Neuroscience from Georgetown University, he belongs to a generation of Nigerian public administrators whose academic foundation has translated into policy innovation. Rather than approaching governance through routine political instincts alone, he has consistently applied scientific reasoning, data systems, and strategic planning to public administration. That intellectual discipline is one of the reasons many observers believe he is exceptionally prepared for the complexity of governing a state as politically important and economically strategic as Oyo.

His administrative footprint in Lagos State remains one of the strongest arguments in his favour. Under Bola Ahmed Tinubu and later Babatunde Fashola, Dr. Gbadegesin played central roles in reforms that transformed governance systems. He led the restructuring of the Property Identification Exercise and Land Use Charge billing system, expanding the database to roughly 250,000 properties and significantly increasing revenue generation within the first year. In practical terms, this demonstrated an ability to build sustainable fiscal systems—an area where many subnational governments in Nigeria continue to struggle.

Even more significant was his leadership in the computerization of land administration in Lagos, where approximately 12 million pages of land title records were digitized into an electronic system—the first initiative of such scale in Nigeria. That reform improved transparency, reduced delays, strengthened investor confidence, and modernized public records management. For a state like Oyo, where land administration remains central to urban growth, industrial expansion, and internally generated revenue, this experience carries direct relevance.

His years in Oyo government equally provide strong evidence of local understanding and direct policy engagement. Under late Abiola Ajimobi, he served as Special Adviser, Commissioner for Health, and Deputy Chief of Staff. These were not ceremonial appointments; they placed him at the heart of executive decision-making during critical periods of state administration. As Commissioner for Health, he introduced the first statewide ambulance service in Oyo, a landmark intervention that strengthened emergency response and expanded access to urgent medical care across communities. He also championed universal health coverage through the Oyo State Health Insurance framework, demonstrating an early recognition that affordable healthcare must remain a priority in modern state governance.

These achievements matter because governance today is increasingly judged by service delivery, not political popularity alone. In healthcare, revenue systems, digital administration, and institutional coordination, Dr. Gbadegesin has repeatedly shown that he understands how government works from the inside, and how reforms can be implemented without unnecessary delay.

His political experience adds another important layer. He chaired the Research and Strategy Committee that contributed to Governor Ajimobi’s historic re-election, the first successful second-term governorship victory in Oyo’s democratic history. He also coordinated the Oyo operations of the Southwest presidential campaign machinery during the 2015 general elections, proving his understanding of political organization, coalition building, and grassroots engagement.

Beyond Oyo, his national relevance continued when he served in transition and advisory capacities around major governance structures linked to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and later contributed to transition planning for Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu in health and environmental policy. Such exposure has allowed him to operate at high levels of policy coordination while maintaining strong local political roots.

Today, as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lagos Waste Management Authority, he leads one of Nigeria’s most visible environmental institutions, overseeing urban sanitation reforms, waste policy modernization, and environmental sustainability programmes in one of Africa’s largest cities. This role further reinforces his executive readiness, particularly in an era when environmental management, urban planning, and public health are deeply interconnected.

What makes Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin especially compelling for Oyo’s future is that he represents a leadership model built on competence, proven results, and administrative maturity. He combines local political familiarity with national-level governance exposure, technocratic discipline with practical service delivery, and intellectual depth with institutional experience.

Oyo State’s next chapter will demand more than political charisma. It will require someone capable of modernizing revenue systems, strengthening healthcare, managing urban growth, attracting development partnerships, and building institutions that outlive political cycles. In that context, many believe Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin stands not merely as another aspirant, but as one of the most prepared hands available for the task ahead.
